Reef Ball - Fox Harbour Station Info
Led by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University, a total of 285 concrete reef balls were installed in the Fox Harbour area of Placentia Bay during the summer of 2025 to help restore and enhance marine habitat affected by vessel activity in the bay.
In 2026, an underwater camera system was installed near a reef ball cluster to monitor marine life and habitat growth around the artificial reef. The camera sits at a depth of approximately 5 m and about 10 m from the reef ball. The system uses a Reach Systems Auk camera purchased from Valor Technologies, both Canadian companies.
The camera and light activate for two minutes every hour. The first 30 seconds of footage are transmitted through the cellular network to Memorial University's Centre for Analytics, Informatics and Research (CAIR) and made publicly available through SmartAtlantic.ca. Full recordings are stored onboard the buoy for annual retrieval.
The monitoring system is powered by batteries supported by solar panels and a wind turbine and is expected to remain in place for up to nine years.
